Kapwa

Oil on Canvas

36" x 48"

In Filipino thought, kapwa is the recognition that the self and the other are not two things. The word is usually translated as "fellow being," but that undersells it. It describes a shared inner identity, a way of seeing in which another person's joy, suffering, and dignity are never wholly foreign to one's own. To harm another is, in this view, to wound oneself, and what one does to oneself ripples outward to others in turn.

For the artist, this understanding extends beyond people to the whole of existence. The wind that moves through the trees also moves something within, and the patterns of the stars mirror the patterns of thought. Life is not a collection of separate stories but one collective narrative, and each person is a fragment of the same piece. Creativity, then, is less an act of the individual ego than a form of participation in a vast, connected whole. Through watching, listening, and sensing, the artist does not impose meaning on the world but joins in what is already unfolding.

Painted in oil on canvas, Kapwa carries this belief in raw, unguarded expression, an emancipatory gesture that seeks to capture a genuine nature rather than a performed one. It stands as both an artwork and an invitation: to see that belonging is not something earned or granted, but something already true.
